Facebook hashtags aren’t brand new at this point (they were announced on June 12, 2013), but they are new enough that I think the points made in the article on Marketing Land are still very valid.

Author Greg Finn says:

… to the delight of many marketers Facebook announced the release of hashtags. The new clickable links will pop open a new stream with public updates around each specific term. While hashtags seem like a great idea, there are quite a few obstacles in the way of #success for this new feature.

The article goes into detail on the following subjects:

  • Why Not Search?
  • Privacy Hinders Effectiveness
  • Hashtags Are Anti-Facebook Page
  • They Are Inferior
  • Page Domination

I haven’t heard anyone raving about them and the only people I see using them with any regularity are my teenage and college-age friends and family. I find reading Facebook posts with them awkward and if the author has gone hashtag happy, downright painful.

I will not be incorporating them into High Aspirations, Inc.’s Facebook posts, at least not for the foreseeable future, simple because I really, really, don’t like them.
